How to read a card

Three numbers tell the story of each project. These are the ones of bilawalsidhu/gods-eye-view, first on the list.

Position
The place GitHub gave the project on its trending page. We copy the order; we do not rank anything ourselves.
Stars gained this month
A star is how people on GitHub bookmark a project they like. This is how many new ones it received in the period.
Growth
The gain compared with the stars the project already had. Small projects on the rise show the largest percentages.

What a month of stars shows

Over thirty days, a single viral post matters less and sustained interest matters more. The repositories here are the ones developers kept discovering for weeks: new tools that became part of people’s setups, and established projects that shipped something large enough to bring a new wave of users.

The figures are large, so read them with the percentage under each one. Tens of thousands of new stars on a project that already had hundreds of thousands is a modest change; a few thousand on a project that had a few hundred a month ago is a different kind of event.

A list that moves slowly

Because the window is long, this page changes little from one day to the next. A project stays until its big week falls out of the window. To see which of these are still gaining today, open the daily list; to see the ones that grew most for their size, open Fastest growing.

Each repository title leads to a page with its license, creation date and last push. A project created within the month and already on this list is worth a second look at those dates before you rely on it.

Why use this instead of the GitHub page

Every list says when it was read
The collection time is printed above each list, and a warning appears when it is more than 24 hours old. A list is never shown as “today” without its date.
The ranking is GitHub’s, not ours
Positions and “stars today” are copied from github.com/trending. There is no hidden score; the method page describes each number.
A page for every day
The daily list is stored under its date in the archive, so yesterday’s ranking does not disappear when today’s replaces it.
Install command only when one exists
The command box appears only when the README contains a real install line that names the project. No generic “git clone” on every card.
Filters you can link to
Search text, language, topic, sort order and view are written to the address, so a link reproduces exactly what you see.
Feeds for readers and scripts
The daily list is available as RSS and as JSON Feed, with the same collection time.

Questions and answers

More detail on the method page.

What period does the monthly list cover?

GitHub’s monthly view (github.com/trending?since=monthly), which counts the stars GitHub attributes to roughly the last thirty days at the time of reading. It is a rolling window, not the current calendar month.

Why do the same projects stay here for weeks?

A thirty-day window changes slowly. A repository that gained tens of thousands of stars in one week will remain near the top until that week leaves the window, even if it is quiet now. Compare with the daily list to see what is still moving.

Is a high monthly number a sign of quality?

It is a sign of attention. Stars measure how many people bookmarked a repository, not whether it is maintained, tested or safe to run. Check the license, the date of the last push and the open issues, which are shown on each repository page when available.
