What trends in Python

Python’s list is the most mixed of all. On the same day it can hold a web framework, a data tool, a command-line utility and several machine-learning projects, because Python is the default language for model training, evaluation and the glue around language models. Research code published alongside a paper also lands here, often as a repository meant to be cloned and run rather than installed.

Package or project?

That difference matters when you want to try something. A library published to PyPI is one pip install away; an application or a research repository usually needs a clone, an environment and its own dependencies. When the README has an install line that names the project, it is shown on the repository page and in the card view. When it does not, expect a set-up section in the README instead.

For all languages together, see today’s list, this week or this month.

Questions and answers

More detail on the method page.

Where does the Python list come from?

From GitHub’s own page for the language, github.com/trending/python?since=daily, read by our collector. Order and “stars today” are GitHub’s.

Why is the pip command missing for some projects?

The box appears only when the README contains an install line that names the project. Many Python repositories are applications, notebooks or research code meant to be cloned, and a package on PyPI can also have a different name from the repository.

How does GitHub decide that a repository is “Python”?

By the language with the largest share of code in the repository, as measured by GitHub’s Linguist. A project with a Python core and a large web front end can therefore be listed under another language.
