What trends in Rust

Rust’s list leans towards infrastructure: command-line tools, terminals and editors, databases and storage engines, runtimes, and the fast cores of tools that are used from other languages. A project here is often a rewrite of an existing tool with performance or safety as the selling point, or the engine behind a Python or JavaScript package.

Installing what you find

Programs published to crates.io install with cargo install, which compiles them on your machine and needs the Rust toolchain. Many projects also ship prebuilt binaries through Homebrew, npm or a release page, and their README recommends that route instead. The command box shows the line the README gives, whichever package manager it uses.

For all languages together, see today’s list, this week or this month.

Questions and answers

More detail on the method page.

Where does the Rust list come from?

From GitHub’s own page for the language, github.com/trending/rust?since=daily, read by our collector. Order and “stars today” are GitHub’s.

What is the difference between “cargo install” and “cargo add” in the command box?

cargo install builds a program and puts it on your path; cargo add adds a library to the project in the current folder. We show whichever line the README gives, and nothing when it gives neither.

Why do some Rust projects show an npm or pip command?

Many tools written in Rust are distributed through other package managers, with a prebuilt binary inside an npm or PyPI package. The box shows the command the README recommends.
