What trends in Java

Java’s list moves more slowly than most and is dominated by long-lived projects: application frameworks, big-data and messaging systems, databases, Android applications written in Java, and study material such as interview guides and algorithm collections, which are popular in this ecosystem.

Why the install box is usually empty

Java libraries are consumed as Maven or Gradle dependencies: a few lines of build configuration with a group, an artifact and a version, not a command to paste in a terminal. This site shows a command only when the README has a real one, so on this page the repository facts — license, last push, open issues — are the more useful signals.

For all languages together, see today’s list, this week or this month.

Questions and answers

More detail on the method page.

Where does the Java list come from?

From GitHub’s own page for the language, github.com/trending/java?since=daily, read by our collector. Order and “stars today” are GitHub’s.

Why do Java projects rarely show an install command?

Most Java libraries are added as a Maven or Gradle dependency, which is a block of build configuration and not a one-line command. The box is reserved for real command lines found in the README.

Are Kotlin and Android projects included?

Only when Java is the largest share of their code. Kotlin is a separate language for GitHub, so a Kotlin-first Android app is not in this list.
