What trends in Go

Go is the language of much of the cloud tooling in daily use, and its trending list shows it: servers, proxies, container and Kubernetes tools, observability agents, self-hosted services and single-binary command-line programs. Projects tend to be applications you run more often than libraries you import.

From list to running binary

A Go program whose module path is its repository address can be built and installed with one go install line, and many projects also publish binaries and container images. Self-hosted services usually document a container command instead. When the README contains such a line naming the project, it appears on the repository page.

For all languages together, see today’s list, this week or this month.

Questions and answers

More detail on the method page.

Where does the Go list come from?

From GitHub’s own page for the language, github.com/trending/go?since=daily, read by our collector. Order and “stars today” are GitHub’s.

Why do Go install commands contain the full GitHub address?

Go modules are identified by their import path, which for most projects is the repository address. “go install github.com/owner/name@latest” downloads and builds that module directly.

Does “go install” work for libraries?

No. “go install” builds programs, that is, packages named main. A library is added to your own module with “go get”, which is why library READMEs often have no install line and no command box here.
